Recommended Computer
Systems for the College of Business
MBA, MACC, Executive MBA
and all undergraduates with Business Majors (Juniors & up)
in the College of Business are required to purchase a laptop
computer to enhance their classroom experience. Below you
will find minimum specifications and recommended configurations
as well as required software that has been approved by the
College of Business.

Minimum Specifications
Windows Compatible
Processor Speed:
1.3GHz minimum (1.2GHz for Tablet PC) with one of these chip
sets: Pentium M, Centrino, IntelDuo, Core Duo, Core2 Duo, or
Core Duo LV. Please
note that Celeron chip sets do not meet program requirements.
Hard Drive:
80GB. If you are purchasing a new
computer with VISTA or may wish to update your computer at a
later time to Windows VISTA you may want to purchase a larger
hard drive. VISTA requires 15GB of disk space.
Video:
256MB (needed for VISTA Business)
Memory (RAM):
2GB minimum
CD-ROM:
DVD burner
Network Capability:
Wireless – Internal or External
Wired LAN -- Internal

Warranty Maintenance:
Purchase the accidental or complete care protection.

Required Software
Operating System:
Acceptable operating systems are Windows XP Professional Service
Pack 2 or Windows VISTA Business.
or Mac OS 10.5 with Intel Processor running Bootcamp
A note about VISTA:
If you purchase a computer with VISTA it must
be VISTA Business (other versions of VISTA will not work
with the UTK computing environment).
Windows XP Professional
(upgrade for Win 98, ME, 2000, XP Home) is available to UT
students for
$75.00at the UC Computer Store.

Required Upgrade
ProMBA students are required to purchase a headset
with attached speakers and microphone (strongly preferred) OR
audio speakers and a separate high quality, ambient noise rejecting
microphone. Neither option can be a USB connection. The UC Computer
Store has used Labtec headsets in the past with good results.

Running Windows on
the Mac With the switch to Intel processors, exciting new options
are available for running the Windows XP operating system on
the Mac. Emulators such as VirtualPC are no longer needed, as
Windows can now run natively on the Mac with no performance disadvantages.
Note that this applies only to Intel Dual
Core based Macs like the MacBook Pro. Older G4 based Macs must still use VirtualPC.
With the latest release of the new Apple operating system,
OS X 10.5 Leopard, Macs are now configured to run Windows right
out of the box using the application Bootcamp. The following
steps must be taken to prepare the Mac for Windows installation:
Purchase and install the full version Microsoft Windows
XP Professional operating system. This software is available
for
$75.00from the University Center Computer Store.
That's it - you're now ready to install and run Windows based
applications on the Windows partition of your Mac.
IMPORTANT: The windows side of your
Mac is now a real Windows based computer, and is therefore
vulnerable to the same worms, viruses, and spyware as other
Windows machines. Please follow safe computing practices that
include running Windows updates, anti-virus software, and anti-spyware
utilities.
